Paver repair

Paver Repair Serving St. Petersburg and Pinellas County, FL

Pavers settle, shift, and come loose, and water is usually what starts it. We find out why the surface moved, fix the cause underneath, re-set the pavers to level, and lock the joints back in, so the repair holds instead of sinking again.

Fix the Cause, Not Just the Symptom

Every repair starts with why the pavers moved.

A sunken spot or a rocking paver is a symptom. Usually water has washed out the joint sand or the bedding underneath, or an edge has lost its support. We lift what has moved, correct what's under it, re-lay and compact the pavers, and refill the joints. Here's the work we do most.

Sunken and Uneven Pavers

Low spots hold water, and uneven pavers become a trip hazard, especially on walkways and around pool decks. We lift the pavers in the affected area, correct the bedding underneath so it's firm and level again, then re-lay and compact them so the surface sits even with the pavers around it. On driveways we pay close attention to where tires load the surface, since that's often where settling starts.

  • Sunken, settled, and heaved pavers lifted and re-set to level
  • Bedding underneath corrected before the pavers go back down
  • Trip hazards on walkways, patios, and pool decks fixed

Loose Pavers and Washed-Out Joints

Joint sand is what locks pavers together. Heavy summer rain and pressure washing wash it out, and once the joints empty, pavers start to rock, shift, and let weeds in. We re-set loose pavers, clean out the joints, and refill and compact them with fresh joint sand so the surface locks together again. Sealing the pavers afterward helps keep that sand in place.

  • Loose and rocking pavers re-set
  • Joints cleaned out and refilled with compacted joint sand
  • Washout and weeds dealt with at the joints, not just on the surface

Edges, Borders, and Drainage

When an edge loses its support, the border row starts to drift and the pavers behind it follow. Water running the wrong way does the same kind of damage, washing sand and bedding out from under the surface. We find where the edge or the water is failing, lift and re-set the affected border pavers, and correct the drainage and washout behind the damage. Our guide to paver edge repair explains why border rows spread.

  • Drifting edges and spread border rows re-set
  • Drainage and washout behind the damage corrected
  • Pool deck edges and drain areas checked and repaired

Our process

How We Repair Pavers

Repair is where shortcuts show up fastest. Patch the surface without fixing the cause and the same spot sinks again, so every repair follows the same order.

It starts with an in-person inspection, since you can't see washed-out bedding or a failing edge in a photo. Repairs usually come before sealing: sealer can't fix movement, and sealing over it locks the problem in. If your pavers need a fresh coat afterward, our paver sealing page covers that step. We repair the pavers you already have; a surface that has to be torn out and rebuilt from scratch is installation work, and we'll tell you plainly if that's what it needs.

Step by step

  • Inspect in person for settling, loose pavers, damaged joints and edges, drainage issues, and washout.
  • Find the cause: missing joint sand, washed-out bedding, a failing edge, or water running the wrong way.
  • Lift the affected pavers and correct the bedding underneath.
  • Re-lay, level, and compact the pavers.
  • Refill and compact the joint sand, and recommend sealing when it will help the repair last.

Paver repair questions

Paver Repair FAQs

Straight answers about sunken, loose, and shifting pavers.

Can sunken pavers be fixed without replacing the whole driveway or patio?

Usually, yes. Most sinking is local: we lift the pavers in the low area, correct the bedding underneath, and re-lay them, reusing the same pavers when they're in good shape. The inspection tells us whether a spot repair will hold. We repair existing pavers and don't do new installations, so if a surface truly needs to be rebuilt, we'll tell you plainly.

What causes pavers to sink or shift?

Water, most of the time. Heavy rain washes out joint sand, water gets under the pavers and softens the bedding, and runoff carries material away at low edges. Vehicle loads, a border that has lost its support, and tree roots add to it. Fixing the cause is what keeps the repair from failing again.

Should pavers be repaired before they are sealed?

Yes. Sealer is a coating: it can't level pavers or hold a failing edge, and sealing over loose pavers or washed-out joints locks the problem in. We repair first, then clean, re-sand, and seal if the surface needs it.

Do you repair pool deck pavers?

Yes. Pool decks stay wet, so sand washes out around drains and the pool edge, and pavers settle or come loose. We re-set those areas and refill the joints. If the deck also needs cleaning and sealing, we'll plan that as part of the same job.

How much does paver repair cost?

It depends on the size of the area, what caused the damage, and how much has to be lifted and re-laid. That's why every quote is done in person: once we see the surface and find the cause, the price matches the work.
